Here and Now
In a video, Greta Gerwig, the director of Lady Bird movie said "I grew up in Sacramento, I love Sacramento, and I think like most people, the place you grow up you can never see clearly while you’re in it. You’re certain life is happening somewhere else”.
Let me tell you a secret: I used to feel like that - like life was happening somewhere else or that I was outside looking in, always waiting, watching.
For most of my teenage years, I had been a proficient daydreamer.
Workshops, events, and opportunities were always seemed to be one flight too far. So, everything that I was interested in, I would learn or keep up with the help of internet. Especially when it came to English as a language, pop culture and young adult literature as interests and digital creation as a skill. I kept learning what I wanted because I was always thinking "well, someday i'll ...."
I knew in my heart I needed to go out as I wanted more than what Solo could offer.
I could have written "So, I did just that" except that it would make the whole thing not a big deal or an easy choice when it was neither.
It was when I was browsing through different college brochures, I found Fashion Marketing and Management Advanced Diploma course from Raffles College of Higher Education. I saw that the modules ranged from digital graphics editing to marketing to financial planning to photography- all of which were interesting to me.
Many discussions were had before my parents and I came to a decision.
A month after I graduated from high school, I moved to Singapore and started my advance diploma course right away.
It felt like I was hitting the ground running, but instead of being afraid or overwhelmed. I was busy, I was learning new things, I was EXCITED.
The feeling of being on the outside disappeared because I am now in a busy city.
I am surrounded by events and workshops and happenings I hadn't thought would interest me.
I am always on the lookout for what is the new literature and art event? What to borrow next from the library? What fashion and design related happenings are there? How can I join? Where is the next place to hangout in?
Life is finally in the here and the now, now, now.
and as Hamilton musicals put it "I am not throwing away my shot!"
